  • January 3-9, 2021    Wise Men

    Read together:  “Wise Men” (pages 218-223 in the Spark Story Bible).

    Family conversation cues (younger children)

    The Wise Men brought special gifts to Jesus.  Have you ever given someone a special gift?  

    Have you ever received a special gift?  What was it about those gifts that made them special?  


    Family conversation cues (older children)

    The Bible says that when the Wise Men saw the star, they were filled with joy (Matthew 2:10).  What are some things about Jesus that fill you with joy today?

    All Family Members

    Read together:  “Simeon and Anna” (pages 226-229 in the Spark Story Bible).

    Younger children

    Simeon blessed Baby Jesus.  A blessing reminds us how much God loves us.  A blessing wishes us well.  What words would you use to bless a new baby?

    Older children

    Each week we end our at-home Treehouse Family Sunday School by blessing each person—a reminder of God’s love, protection, and strength.  What do you think Simeon’s blessing for Baby Jesus was like?

    Jesus Is Born

    (younger children)

    Mary and Joseph’s trip to Bethlehem, a new baby, angels, and shepherds. Everybody did something important in this Christmas story. What is something important that you do at Christmas?

    (older children)

    God used Mary, Joseph, an innkeeper, and shepherds in an unfolding story of love and joy. They were regular people, living their daily lives. What about you? What are some ways God is using you in your daily life to share love and joy?

    Zechariah’s baby boy named John grew up to do a very special job for God.  John told people to bet ready because Jesus was coming.  What special jobs do you think God wants you to do?

    When John grew up, he prepared people for the coming of Jesus.  Have you ever thought about what God wants you to do in your life?

    Angels Visit Mary and Joseph

    (younger children)

    Imagine that you are Mary or Joseph and an angel just appeared to you. What might you think? What might you see? What might you hear?

    (older children)

    If an angel appeared to you with an incredible message, how might you react? How would you know that you could trust God’s plan and promise?

    God had plans for Mary and Joseph. God has plans for us that may include some surprises. We can be like Mary and Joseph and have faith in God’s promises. [Family member’s name], God has amazing plans for you. You are a blessing.

    (younger children)

    God used a baby from a tiny town to bring peace and love to the whole world.  God can use you, too.  Think about some ways God could use you to help others today. 

    (older children)

    In Bible times, God spoke to prophets who told the people God’s message.  How does God speak to us today?  If God could use a baby from a tiny town to bring peace and love to the whole world, God can use you.  What are some ways God could use you this week?

    The baby born in the tiny town of Bethlehem grew up to care for and help all people.  God can use us to care for His world and His people.

    Daniel Prays to God


    All Family Members

    Read together:  “Daniel and the Lions” (pages 184-189 in the Spark Story Bible).

    Family conversation cues

    Younger Children

    Daniel prayed to God every day.  When we pray, we talk to God and God talks to

    us.  We can pray anytime, in any place.  What are some things you can pray about?

    Older Children

    Daniel knew it was important to pray to God and he prayed even when the king

    made a law against it.  Why should you pray to God?  Prayer is talking with God

    and listening to God—what do you want to pray about?

     

    Family Blessing

    God wants us to talk with Him and stay close to Him.  You can pray out loud or in your heart.  You can tell God you love him, ask God to help you, and pray for God

    to help and protect your friends and family.

    Younger Children

    The three friends did what God wanted them to do. What they did showed the king and everyone else that they loved God. What do you do to show people that you love God?

    Older Children

    Have you ever heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words?” How can your actions show you love God?

    Because the three friends bravely did what they knew was right, the king learned

    about God. What you do shows other people how much you love God.

    The Lord is My Shepherd

    Read together: “The Lord Is My Shepherd” (pages 160-163 in the Spark Story

    Bible). Also, read Psalm 23 in your Bible.


    Family Conversation Cues

    Younger Children

    David wrote a song about how God loved and cared for him. How do you know

    that God loves and protects you? Maybe you can sing a song about God’s love.

    Older Children

    David thought about his job taking care of the sheep. He thought about how God loved and protected him. Think about your days at home and at school. How do

    you know that God loves and protects you? Sing a song or write a poem about

    God’s love and care.


    Family Blessing

    David cared for the sheep. God cared for and protected David. God protects you and cares for you always. [Family member’s name], you can care for others. You are a blessing.

    Esther Saves Her People

    Read together:   “Queen Esther” (pages 152-157 in the Spark Story Bible).You might also read Esther 2:5-8; 3:1-6; and 8:1-7.

    Younger Children

    Esther was brave to tell the king about people who needed help.  Can you think

    of some people who need help?  What are some things your family might do to

    help?

    Older Children

    Esther spoke up for people who needed help, even when it was scary.  Who are the people in your world who need help?  How can you speak up for people who need help at school or work, at home, or in your neighborhood?

     

    Family Blessing

    Esther showed courage.  God will help you have the courage to help others.

    Hannah Prays for a Child

    Read together“Hannah Prays for a Baby” (pages 118-121 in the Spark Story Bible).

    You might also read 1 Samuel 1:9-27.


    Family Conversation Cues

    Younger Children

    Hannah knew that God would hear her prayer.  What is in your heart that you want

    to pray about?  What might help you remember to pray every day? 


    Older Children

    Hannah prayed with strong faith that God would hear her prayer.  What does

    it mean to pray with faith?   What is in your heart that you want to pray for as

    faithfully as Hannah prayed? 

     

    Family Blessing

    Hannah knew that God would hear her prayer.  God blessed Hannah.  You can

    pray by yourself or with someone else.  God hears your prayer and blesses you.

    The Burning Bush

    Read Together: "The Burning Bush" (pages 72-75 in the Spark Story Bible). You might also read Exodus 3:1-15.

    Younger Children

    God asked Moses to do a hard thing by going back to Egypt. Moses was scared and didn't think he could do it. What is a hard thing you have had to do? How does God help us do hard things?

    Older Children

    Moses was afraid he couldn't do what God asked him to do, so he gave God a lot of excuses. How do you feel when you know you are supposed to do something you don't think you can do or don't want to do? Have you ever made excuses instead of trying?


    Family Blessing

    God helped Moses and God helps us in hard situations. (Family member's name), God helps yo do hard things. You are a blessing.

    God Protects Baby Moses

    All Family Members

    Read Together:  "Baby Moses" (pages 66-71 in the Spark Story Bible). You might also read Exodus 2:1-10.

    Younger Children

    God protected baby Moses and God planned for people to protect you and keep you safe. Who are some people who protect and help keep you safe?

    Older Children

    God protected Moses. how does God protect you? How does it feel to be protected? When have you felt God's protection?


    Family Blessing

    God protects Moses. God protects you and loves you every hour of every day. Close your eyes for a moment and feel God's love and protection wrap around you. (Family member's name), God created you, loves you, and protects you. You are a blessing.

    Joseph and His Brothers

    Read together:  “Joseph Helps His Family” (pages 60-65 in the Spark Story Bible).


    Family conversation cues

    Younger Children

    Joseph’s brothers had done some very mean things to him.  Have you ever been mad at someone who unkind and hurt you?  What did you do?  Joseph forgave his brothers.  When we forgive someone, we don’t feel mad anymore and we can be kind to them.

    Older Children

    Have you had a time you were treated unfairly?  What did you do?

    Why is it important to forgive others as Joseph did?

     

    Family Blessing

    God gave Joseph the power not to be mad and to forgive his brothers for the terrible way they treated him.  God wants us to forgive just like Joseph did.

    God’s Promise to Abraham  


    All Family Members              

    Read together:  “God’s Promises to Abram” and “Abraham and Sarah’s Visitors” (pages 30-37 in the Spark Bible).


    Family conversation cues

    Younger Children

    God’s promise to Abraham was really big!  What are some big things that God is doing for you?  Go outside to look at the night sky.  As you count the stars, thank God for the big and little things He has given you.  

    Older Children

    Is it easier to wait for something when you know when the wait will be over or

    when you don’t know?

    Abraham and Sarah kept waiting.  They trusted God to keep His promises—

    that’s faith!  What helps you have faith when you are waiting?

    We are stars in God’s big family.  Be sure your starlight shines for God.

    Read together:  “Noah’s Ark” (pages 20-25 in the Spark Story Bible). You might also read:  Genesis 6:8 through 8:18 and Genesis 9:8-17.


    Family Conversation Cues

    Younger Children

    God made a promise to Noah.  Has anyone ever made a promise to you?  What does it mean when someone makes a promise?

    Older Children

    Has there ever been a time that someone broke a promise to you? 

    Sometimes we make a wrong choice and break promises. One of the great things about God is that He never breaks His covenant (promises) to us.

     

    Family Blessing

    When God makes a promise, He keeps it.  A rainbow helps us remember that God keeps His promises to us.  (Family member’s name), you are a special creation of God.  You are a blessing.
